On October 21st, 2025, at approximately 11:19 p.m., officers responded to confirmed shots fired in the area of Van Nostrand and Ocean Avenues, with no injuries were reported, the department announced.
Nearly two weeks later, just after midnight on November 6th, 2025, officers responded to another confirmed shots fired incident in the area of 102-106 Rutgers Avenue. While no injuries were reported, several parked vehicles sustained bullet damage.
Then on January 10th, 2026, Jersey City police officers responded to a report of a person with a gun. Upon arrival, officers engaged in a foot pursuit with a suspect matching the caller’s description. The suspect was apprehended and a handgun was recovered.
Subsequent ballistic analysis confirmed that the recovered firearm was used in both of the earlier shooting incidents.
Following further investigation, the ceasefire unit obtained a warrant for the juvenile suspect’s arrest.
On February 9th, members of the ceasefire unit, with assistance from the JCPD Street Crimes Unit, arrested the suspect on Bidwell Avenue without incident.
The juvenile, 15, of Jersey City, is charged with criminal attempt, murder, possession of firearms for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a firearm by a minor.
“This case shows what happens when we invest in smart, targeted enforcement and hold violent offenders accountable. We will continue to support the men and women of the Jersey City Police Department as they work every day to prevent future violence,” Mayor James Solomon said in a statement.
“Our officers followed the evidence, connected the dots across multiple incidents, and removed a dangerous firearm from our streets. This is focused police work that directly protects our neighborhoods,” noted Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.
The investigation remains ongoing.
